영어 수업 활동 ( English Class Activities)

 

학생들의 영어 학습에 대한 흥미를 높이기 위해서, 저는 수업 주제에 맞게 다양한 활동들을 활용합니다. 수업에 사용하는 학습 자료는 단순히 언어 능력 향상을 돕는 데 그치지 않고, 학생들이 수업에 적극적으로 참여하도록 동기를 부여해야 한다고 믿습니다. 수업 목표에 따라 노래, 챈트, 시, 영상 자료, 게임, 도서, 역할극 등의 활동을 적절히 선택하여 사용하고 있습니다. 

 

예를 들어, 챈트는 영어의 음절과 연음 규칙을 연습하는 데 효과적이면서도 즐거운 활동입니다. 구조가 단순하고 리듬감이 있어 학생들이 발음 패턴을 자연스럽게 내면화하는 데 도움을 줍니다. 챈트를 듣고 따라할 때 영어 음절에 맞쳐 박자를 쳐 주면 더 좋습니다. 이 때 저는 나무자를 이용합니다. 

 

영상 자료는 실제 맥락 속에서 사용되는 영어를 소개하는 데 유용합니다. 특히 유투브에는 엄청나게 방대한 자료들이 있고, 학습 주제에 따라 적합한 영상을 찾는것이 동시에 중요할 겁니다. 예를 들어 세계 여러 나라의 박물관을 소개하는 짧은 영상을 보여 주어 학생들의 문화적 이해와 어휘력을 함께 확장시킬 수 있습니다. 

 

노래, 시를 활용한 활동은 라이밍, 리듬, 유창성을 지도하는 데 매우 효과적이며, 많은 학생들에게 이 활동들은 흥미롭고, 이 활동들을 통해 주요 표현을 기억에 잘 남길 수 있습니다. 특히 어린 학생들에게 듣고 말하기 스킬을 연습하는데 노래만큼 좋은 활동이 없는 것 같습니다. 

 

역할극은 학생들이 가장 좋아하는 활동입니다. 매 단원마다 한개 차시수업은 역할극을 위해 비워둘 정도입니다. 교과서에 제시된 역할극 대사는 그 단원의 주요표현을 실제와 유사한 상황 속에서 말할 수 있도록 합니다. 영어 사용이 주요 목적이지만, 역할극을 발표하는 과정에서 소품을 준비한다거나, 대사를 각색한다거나, 상황과 대사에 어울리는 동작을 구상하면서 학생들은 서로 협력하며  창의력을 발휘하게 됩니다. 역할극을 통해 학생들은 학습한 내용을 적용하고, 의사소통에 대한 자신감과 표현력과 창의력을 기를 수 있습니다. 

 

 

학생들의 언어 범위를 확장하기 위해 다양한 도서와 읽기 자료를 활용합니다. 교과서 표현들이 유용하지만, 때로는 표현이 제한적일 수 있습니다. 다양한 표현이 담긴 책을 읽음으로써 학생들은 더 풍부한 언어를 접하고, 깊이 있는 이해력을 기를 수 있습니다.

 

이처럼 진정성 있고, 즐겁고, 목적이 분명한 활동들을 선별함으로써, 다양한 수준의 학생들이 동기를 가지고 수업에 참여하며 영어 실력을 향상시킬 수 있는 학습 환경을 조성하고자 노력합니다.

To increase students’ interest in learning English, I use a variety of activities that align with the lesson objectives. I believe that the learning materials used in class should not only help improve language ability but also motivate students to actively participate. Depending on the lesson goals, I appropriately select and use activities such as songs, chants, poems, video materials, games, books, and role-plays.

 

For example, chants are an enjoyable activity that effectively practices English syllables and linking rules. Because they have a simple structure and rhythm, chants help students internalize pronunciation patterns naturally. It’s even more effective if students clap to the beat while listening to and repeating the chants. At this time, I use a wooden ruler for a rhythm stick.

 

Video materials are useful for introducing English used in real contexts. There is an enormous amount of content on YouTube, so it’s important to find videos that match the learning theme and use clear language for young learners. For instance, showing short videos that introduce museums around the world can expand students’ cultural understanding as well as vocabulary.

 

Activities that use songs and poems are very effective for teaching rhyming, rhythm, and fluency. Many students find these activities engaging, and they help key expressions stay in students’ memories. Especially for young learners, there is nothing better than songs for practicing listening and speaking skills.

 

Role-plays are students’ favorite activity. So much so that I reserve one class period in each unit for role-playing. The dialogue provided in the textbook allows students to speak the unit’s key expressions in situations that resemble real life. Although using English is the main goal, the process of preparing props, adapting lines, and imagining gestures that fit the situation and dialogue encourages students to cooperate and be creative. Through role-plays, students can apply what they have learned and build confidence in communication as well as expressive and creative skills.

 

To broaden students’ language exposure, I use a variety of books and reading materials. While the expressions in the textbook are useful, they can sometimes be limited. By reading books with varied expressions, students are exposed to richer language and can develop deeper comprehension.

 

By selecting activities that are authentic, enjoyable, and purposeful, I strive to create a learning environment where students of diverse levels are motivated to participate and improve their English skills.
